Zinc protoporphyrin-to-heme ratio and ferritin as measures of iron sufficiency in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The Journal of Pediatrics Dec 08, 2017

German K, et al. - This research was initiated in order to assess the ferritin and zinc protoporphyrin-to-heme (ZnPP/H) ratios as biomarkers of iron status in neonates. Researchers also ascertained how specific clinical events exerted an impact on these measures and how iron status changed during hospitalization. Ferritin disclosed a significant impact by inflammatory events such as sepsis and transfusion than ZnPP/H. Hence, ZnPP/H could present as a more reliable marker of iron status in this cohort. Worsening iron sufficiency was reported in infants, over time, despite supplementation above American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines.
