Zinc levels and birth weight in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus: A matched cohort study in China
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism May 13, 2020
Luo J, Wu W, Zhang P, et al. - Experts aspired to explore if gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) modifies the correlation between zinc (Zn) levels and birth weight. Between 2012 and 2016, a cohort matched by GDM was established in Taiyuan, China, comprising 752 women with GDM and 744 women without. Dietary Zn intake has been evaluated during pregnancy. They used multivariate linear regression and multinomial logistic regression to explore the link between Zn levels and birth weight in offspring born to women with or without GDM. Data reported that 88.8% (N = 1,328) of the population had inadequate Zn intake during pregnancy. In this population characterized by inadequate Zn intake, GDM may modify the correlations between maternal blood and cord blood Zn levels and birth weight. Such results indicate a previously undiscovered path of GDM adverse effects.
