Zero TE MRI applications to transcranial MR-guided focused ultrasound: Patient screening and treatment efficiency estimation
Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Apr 21, 2019
Caballero-Insaurriaga J, et al. - In this retrospective study involving 16 patients treated with transcranial magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (tcMRgFUS) thalamotomy for tremor, researchers evaluated the feasibility of screening for tcMRgFUS based on zero echo time (ZTE) MRI, and examined the influence of measurable skull parameters in treatment performance. According to results, measures based on computed tomography (CT) and ZTE were substantially correlated. It has been proven the feasibility of ZTE-based screening, potentially making it possible to avoid ionizing radiation and the extra imaging session needed for CT. Characterizing the influence of skull properties on tcMRgFUS can be used to develop patient-specific heating models, potentially enhancing control over the outcome of treatment. The skull thickness relationship with efficiency and nonlinearity enhances this metric's role in defining such models. Furthermore, the lower association of SDR with the curves of energy–temperature emphasizes the need to revisit this metric.
