Young age and tobacco use are predictors of lower medication adherence in inflammatory bowel disease
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Jul 15, 2019
Bruna-Barranco I, et al. - In this cross-sectional analysis, researchers analyzed Spanish patients (n=181) with inflammatory bowel disease who visited adult tertiary clinic in a 3-month period, to evaluate the prevalence of medication nonadherence as well as to determine predictors of low medication adherence in these subjects. High medication adherence was seen in only half of the patients. The factors that appeared to predict low medication adherence were young age, active smoking, and Crohn’s disease. Based on these findings, directing the efforts for strengthening medication adherence particularly to young patients and smokers is recommended.
