Worldwide prevalence of suicidal ideation and suicide plan among people with schizophrenia: A meta-analysis and systematic review of epidemiological surveys
Translational Psychiatry Nov 03, 2021
Bai W, Liu ZH, Jiang YY, et al. - Researchers conducted a meta-analysis and systematic review investigating the prevalence of suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide plan (SP) among people with schizophrenia.
PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and PsycINFO yielded 26 studies covering 5,079 people with schizophrenia for inclusion in meta-analysis.
The lifetime and point prevalence of SI were 34.5%, and 29.9%, and of SP were 44.3% and ranging from 6.4% to 13%, respectively.
Overall people living with schizophrenia, especially males and inpatients, commonly describe SI and SP.
In this population, implementation of routine screening and effective interventions for SI and SP is recommended.
