Women’s recovery from anorexia nervosa: A systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative research

Eating Disorders Aug 27, 2019

Stockford C, Kroeseet BS, Beesley A, et al. - In this systematic review, researchers assessed qualitative studies examining female service users’ experiences of recovering from anorexia nervosa (AN) and conducted a meta-synthesis of the themes identified in these studies. Searching PsycInfo, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Medline, they selected 14 studies for analysis. Dealing with a fragmented sense of self, a turning point where insight and commitment to recovery is developed, and, in recovery, a reclamation of self through meaningful relationships, rebuilding identity and self-acceptance were common themes reported describing the process of recovery from AN. Observations revealed that many factors contribute to the recovery from AN which is experienced as a complex psychological process. Findings emphasize the necessity to reconsider clinical practice and treatment provision to include the psychological components of self-identity into recovery programs.
