Women are less likely to be tested for HIV or offered preexposure prophylaxis at the time of sexually transmitted infection diagnosis
Sexually Transmitted Diseases Dec 18, 2020
Yumori C, Zucker J, Theodore D, et al. - As sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are identified as significant biomarkers of HIV risk and should trigger preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) discussion, researchers here reviewed STI testing practices outside of sexual health clinics to report on the opportunities for improvement in the provision of HIV prevention services. Using an electronic sexual health dashboard, they included a total of 815 patients with 856 patient encounters with a positive gonorrhea, chlamydia, and/or rapid plasma reagin test result. Findings suggest the existence of gaps in HIV prevention among patients diagnosed with bacterial STI outside of sexual health clinics. Particularly among women, HIV screening, multisite STI screening, and discussion of PrEP were infrequent.
