Widespread hyperesensitivity to pressure pain in men with cluster headache during prolonged remission is not related to the levels of depression and anxiety
Pain Practice Sep 27, 2019
Gómez-Mayordomo V, et al. - Researchers examined if pressure pain hypersensitivity persists in a long-lasting remission phase among men with episodic cluster headache (CH). A blinded assessor assessed pressure pain thresholds in 40 men with episodic CH and 40 matched controls, bilaterally over one trigeminal (temporalis muscle) and three extra-trigeminal points (C5/C6 zygapophyseal joint, second metacarpal, tibialis anterior muscle). Assessment of patients was done in a prolonged remission phase, at least 6 months after their last CH attack and without taking any medication. Outcomes revealed bilateral widespread hypersensitivity to pressure pain among CH patients during long-lasting remission periods, which showed no correlation with depression or anxiety. Results thereby support that central sensitization persist in episodic CH, even in remote asymptomatic phases.
