White matter hyperintensities and recurrent stroke risk in stroke patients with small-vessel disease

European Journal of Neurology Jan 17, 2019

Park JH, et al. - Among Asian ischemic stroke patients with small-vessel disease (SVD) (including micro/macrobleeds and lacunes), researchers assessed the relationship between white matter hyperintensities (WMH) severity and the risk of recurrent vascular events. For this investigation, they reviewed data from 1,454 participants in the PreventIon of CArdiovascular Events in iSchemic Stroke Patients with High Risk of Cerebral HemOrrhage trial. Using the Fazekas scale, the severity of WMH in baseline brain MRI scans was evaluated. Findings revealed that study patients had a significant SVD burden. In Asian ischemic stroke patients with SVD burden, advanced WMH was related to an increased risk of recurrent vascular events and it can act as a prognostic indicator for recurrent vascular events.
