White matter alterations in Parkinson disease with levodopa-induced dyskinesia

Parkinsonism & Related Disorders Jul 28, 2021

Ogawa T, Hatano T, Kamagata K, et al. - Using advanced diffusion magnetic resonance imaging techniques, researchers sought to illustrate white matter alterations in Parkinson disease with levodopa-induced dyskinesia. The sample consisted of 26 clinically confirmed Parkinson disease patients without levodopa-induced dyskinesia, 25 Parkinson disease patients with levodopa-induced dyskinesia, and 23 healthy controls. The results indicate that Parkinson disease with levodopa-induced dyskinesia causes less white matter microstructural disruption, particularly in temporal lobe fibers, than Parkinson disease without levodopa-induced dyskinesia. Such fibers have a more than 2-fold odds ratio for the presence of levodopa-induced dyskinesia and may be involved in the sequela pathogenesis.
