American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Aug 14, 2020
Tulaci KG, Arslan E, Tulaci T, et al. - This study was carried out to ascertain if transoral rigid laryngeal endoscopy (TORLE) or transnasal flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopy (TNFFL) is more favorable for laryngeal endoscopic examination in the elderly population. Researchers conducted a randomized prospective study in a tertiary reference center. They further performed TORLE or TNFFL to patients who were over 65 years at their first visit according to the randomization list. They recorded Patients' physiological parameters (Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation before and immediately after the laryngeal examination. After the first and second endoscopic examinations, patients' pain-irritation, gag reflex, and dyspnea status were analyzed applying a visual analog scale. For TORLE and TNFFL, further patient preferences were recorded. A total of 96 patients were included in the study. For the laryngeal examination, TORLE is more suitable for elderly patients since it is more comfortable for the patient and does not change physiological parameters.
