Which measuring site in ankylosing spondylitis is best to detect bone loss and what predicts the decline: Results from a 5-year prospective study
Arthritis Research & Therapy Dec 17, 2017
Deminger A, et al. - Researchers performed this study comprising a long follow-up, many measuring sites, and first longitudinal assessment of the lateral projection of the spine in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients. The main focus was to assess the bone mineral density (BMD) changes after 5 years at different measuring sites in patients with AS and to evaluate disease-related variables and medications as predictors for BMD changes. Findings indicated an increase in lateral projection spinal BMD. The femoral neck was identified as the best site to assess bone loss and BMD was adversely impacted by inflammation and positively by the use of bisphosphonates and tumor necrosis factor inhibitors.
