What is the role of metabolic syndrome and obesity for postoperative atrial fibrillation after coronary bypass grafting?
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Jun 22, 2019
Vural U, et al. - Researchers retrospectively assessed patients (n=756) who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting to see how postoperative atrial fibrillation is influenced by obesity and metabolic syndrome, if these are independent risk factors, and their impact level. They also investigated how postoperative complications were influenced by atrial fibrillation. In this study, metabolic syndrome and obesity were concluded to be two independent risk factors for postoperative atrial fibrillation. The frequency of infection and stroke were 1.45 and 8.85 times higher, respectively, in patients with postoperative atrial fibrillation. Findings revealed a 31% longer hospital stay and 17% higher infection rate in cases with metabolic syndrome. In addition, 23.5% longer hospitalization was reported in obese patients. In order to attenuate cost of hospitalization and morbidity, it seems necessary to identify the causes and mechanisms of postoperative atrial fibrillation.
