What is the best timing of repeated CT scan in mild head trauma with an initial positive CT scan?
World Neurosurgery Jul 05, 2018
Trevisi G, et al. - Given that mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) is among the most common causes of accident and emergency admission, researchers sought for the best timing for repeated CT scan in mild head trauma after an initial positive CT scan. They noted serial CT scans were often used in clinical practice regardless of variations of patients’ neurological status. Study results revealed that repeated CT scans were of minimal benefit in the management of clinically stable patients with a MTBI and post-traumatic intracranial lesions at initial CT scan. In cases of neurological stability, delaying a control scan up to 48 hours should be safe to avoid unnecessary scans.
