What Happens After Menopause? (WHAM): A prospective controlled study of cardiovascular and metabolic risk 12 months after premenopausal risk-reducing bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy
Gynecologic Oncology May 12, 2021
Hickey M, Moss KM, Mishra GD, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to prospectively measure cardiometabolic risk 12 months after premenopausal risk-reducing bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (RRBSO) compared to a similar age comparison group, as well as the effects of hormone therapy (HT) on cardiometabolic risk. Ninety-five premenopausal women planning RRBSO and 99 comparisons who retained their ovaries participated in this prospective observational study. Baseline cardiometabolic phenotypes were comparable between groups but more RRBSO candidates were overweight/obese with higher waist/hip ratios. Twelve months after RRBSO, cardiometabolic risk markers are largely unchanged. HT after RRBSO can help to prevent waist circumference gain.
