What are the dietary treatment research priorities for inflammatory bowel disease? A short report based on a priority setting partnership with the James Lind Alliance
Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics Aug 26, 2017
Lomer MC, et al. – The researchers performed this study to present a comprehensive summary of the research priority findings relating to diet in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In the management of IBD, dietary treatment options were important research priorities. From patients, around three–quarters of diet related questions came, who were especially interested in how diet could impact disease activity and symptom control.
Methods- The researchers used the James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership process to develop research priorities in IBD.
- They invited patients, clinicians, and other stakeholders to provide up to 5 treatment uncertainties in IBD.
- These uncertainties were examined, revised, and ranked, leading to a final top 10 research questions in IBD.
- The researchers collected 1671 uncertainties from 531 participants and refined to exclude duplicates leaving 1253 uncertainties.
- Out of these, they categorised 348 as diet-related and grouped according to topic.
- There were 206 uncertainties associated with how diet could be used to treat IBD or alleviate symptoms.
- From patients, 72% of diet-related questions came.
- They included 1 broadly diet-related and 2 diet-specific treatment uncertainties in the top 10 research priorities for IBD.
