What are the barriers and challenges faced by adolescents when searching for sexual health information on the Internet? Implications for policy and practice from a qualitative study
Sexually Transmitted Infections May 05, 2019
Patterson SP, et al. - Using a novel qualitative approach of paired interviews combined with real-time online activities, researchers investigated the key impediments and challenges in accessing and using online information about sexual health. The main practical barriers identified were difficulty filtering overabundant content; limited awareness of specific, relevant, trusted online sources; difficulty finding locally relevant information about services; and difficulty navigating large organizations’ websites. Fear of being observed, wariness about engaging with visual and auditory content, concern about unintentionally accessing sexually explicit content, and reticence to access sexual health information on social networking platforms or through smartphone applications were the main socio-cultural barriers identified.
