Weight loss prior to pregnancy and early gestational glycemia: Prepare, a randomized clinical trial
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Jul 30, 2021
Leblanc ES, Smith NX, Vesco KK, et al. - Researchers investigated if pre-pregnancy weight loss correlates with an improvement in the early metabolic environment as determined by early gestational diabetes diagnosis. They conducted a secondary analysis of a pragmatic randomized clinical trial carried out in an integrated health system encouraging high-risk women, including those with obesity, to undergo first trimester gestational diabetes screening. Randomization of women aged 18-40 years with BMI ≥ 27 kg/m 2 who were planning pregnancy was performed to a behavioral weight loss intervention or usual care. Findings revealed lower rates of gestational diabetes diagnosis in early pregnancy among participation in a pre-pregnancy weight loss intervention. This indicates that pre-pregnancy weight loss has positive effects on the early metabolic environment, a critical factor in offspring metabolic risk.
