Weight loss and breast cancer incidence in postmenopausal women
Cancer Oct 12, 2018
Chlebowski RT, et al. – Researchers assessed the relationship between weight change and breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women who had no prior history of breast cancer with normal mammogram (n=61,335) in the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study. They recorded and analyzed body mass index, weight, and height measurements at baseline and year 3. Change in weight at year 3 was categorized as stable (< 5%), loss (≥ 5%), or gain (≥ 5%), with further assessment of weight loss intentionality by self-report. They found that weight gain was related to higher triple-negative breast cancer incidence but was not associated with breast cancer risk. The study findings suggested that postmenopausal women who lose weight may reduce their risk of breast cancer.
