Weight gain after diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus and its association with adverse pregnancy outcomes: A cohort study
BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth Mar 26, 2021
Zheng W, Huang W, Liu C, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective cohort study to assess the association of gestational weight gain (GWG) after oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) with maternal and neonatal outcomes in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), defined as the onset of or newly recognized glucose intolerance during pregnancy. Three thousand one hundred twenty-six women diagnosed with GDM were used for analyzing the correlation of GWG with pregnancy and neonatal outcomes. Excessive GWG after OGTT was linked to an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, whereas insufficient GWG after OGTT did not increase the risk of low birth weight. GWG restriction after GDM diagnosis in women with excessive GWG in the first half of pregnancy may be beneficial in preventing pregnancy-induced hypertension and preeclampsia, large for gestational age, macrosomia, and cesarean birth.
