Walking speed, cognitive function, and dementia risk in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Jun 13, 2018

Hackett RA, et al. - Researchers used a longitudinal observational study design to clarify the links between walking speed, cognitive function, and the interaction between changes in these measures and dementia risk among individuals aged 60 and older (N=3,932) enrolled in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Cox proportional hazards regression was also used to model the links. They found that in this community-dwelling sample of English adults, the risk of developing dementia was greater among those who had slower walking speeds and a greater decline in speed over time; this link was observed to be independent of changes in cognition.
