Vivax malaria chemoprophylaxis: The role of Atovaquone-proguanil, compared to other options

Eyal M, et al. - A retrospective observational study focusing on P. vivax prophylaxis was performed. Short-course atovaquone-proguanil appeared to provide causal (liver-schizont stage) prophylaxis for P. vivax, but against late, hypnozoite-reactivation-related attacks, it proved ineffective. Findings suggested that for areas with high co-circulation of P. falciparum and P. vivax, primaquine should be considered as the chemoprophylactic agent of choice.
