Vitamin D in preterm and full-term infants
Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism Nov 27, 2020
Abrams SA, et al. - Since there are no strong data to support either routine testing of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D or targeting high serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels (eg, 30 ng/mL) in healthy preterm or full-term infants, researchers sought to analyze the role of vitamin D in preterm and full-term infants. Infant formula includes vitamin D, and most infants will reach an intake from the formula of approximately 400 IU daily within the first 2 months of life if they consume a routine cow milk-based formula. While vitamin D toxicity is very rare, caution should be used to prevent extremely concentrated high doses contained in some commercially available drops. Special attention to vitamin D intake and status may be required for infants with liver or kidney disease.
