Vitamin D deficiency as a risk factor for renal scarring in recurrent urinary tract infections
Pediatrics International Jul 24, 2020
Döven SS, et al. - In the present study, experts aspired to explore whether vitamin D deficiency can be a risk factor for renal scarring in patients with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Participants in the study were patients (aged 1 to 18 years) who were admitted to the Pediatric Nephrology Department of the center between November 1, 2018, and November 1, 2019, and who were diagnosed with recurrent UTIs. According to findings, vitamin D deficiency (< 20 ng/ml) was noted in 73.9% of the patients without renal scarring, and 94.1% of those with renal scarring. Vitamin D deficiency in patients with recurrent UTIs is considered to be a risk factor for renal scarring. Treatment with vitamin D may help prevent renal scarring in patients with recurrent UTI.
