Vitamin D attenuates sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P)-Mediated inhibition of extravillous trophoblast migration

Placenta Oct 05, 2017

Westwood M, et al. - This article is written with the goal to explore the impact of vitamin D attenuates sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) on extravillous trophoblast (EVT) function. The outcome of this study exhibits that although EVT expresses three S1P receptor isoforms, S1P predominantly signals through S1PR2/Gα12/13 to activate Rho and thereby acts as the potent inhibitor of EVT migration. Importantly, expression of S1PR2, and therefore S1P function, can be down-regulated by vitamin D. This information recommend that vitamin D deficiency, which is known to be related to pre-eclampsia (PE), may contribute to the impaired trophoblast migration that underlies this condition.
