Visual recovery after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in relation to pre-operative spherical equivalent

Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Oct 16, 2020

Tay E, et al. - In this investigation involving 107 patients (214 eyes), researchers sought to evaluate visual recovery after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in relation to preoperative spherical equivalent. Patients were examined preoperatively, 1 day, 2 weeks, 1 month and 3 months later, following surgery. According to results, mean ± standard deviation preoperative spherical equivalent was − 5.30 ± 1.36 D that decreased significantly to 0.04 ± 0.70 D at 1 month and − 0.02 ± 0.66 D at 3 months. Findings suggested no association of postoperative acuities with refractive targets, laser cut energy settings or other variables. In the early postoperative period, SMILE for low myopia showed faster visual recovery with no significant variations between groups found between 1 and 3 months.
