Visual acuity and ophthalmic outcomes in the year after cataract surgery among children younger than 13 years
JAMA Ophthalmology May 22, 2019
Researchers undertook this cohort study of 880 children who underwent cataract surgery to examine their visual outcomes and rate of complications 1 year following cataract surgery. Half of the children who underwent lensectomy were diagnosed with amblyopia. In 60.2% of eyes, lensectomy was performed with intraocular lens implantation, that resulted in normal visual acuity in about 1 in 3 eyes. They noted a low rate of unexpected complications, however, a subsequent surgery was required in nearly 1 in 5 eyes, most often for visual axis obscuration. As per these findings, they recommend undertaking frequent monitoring and management of refractive error, amblyopia, and visual axis clouding during the first year after surgery.
