Visceral obesity and muscle mass determined by CT scan and surgical outcome in patients with advanced ovarian cancer: A retrospective cohort study

Gynecologic Oncology Oct 27, 2020

Heus C, Smorenburg A, Stoker J, et al. - Researchers analyzed patients with advanced ovarian cancer receiving cytoreductive surgery, to examine the link between body composition and complications in this patient group. Patients had FIGO stage 3 or 4 ovarian cancer. Experts measured visceral fat area, total skeletal mass as well as total fat area on a single slice on the level of L3-L4 of the preoperative computed tomography-scan. The definition of visceral obesity (VO) was visceral fat ≥ 100cm2. This analysis involved 298 consecutive patients. In 4.9% of VO patients vs 0.6% of the non-visceral obese patients, thrombotic events occurred. The factors predictive of post-surgical complications were: VO, hypertension and duration of surgery. A higher occurrence of complications was noted in relation to visceral obesity in this patient population with advanced ovarian cancer undergoing cytoreductive surgery.
