Visceral adiposity index and cervical arterial atherosclerosis in northeast China: A population‐based cross‐sectional survey
European Journal of Neurology Sep 12, 2020
Yu Y, Zhang FL, Yan XL, et al. - Since the visceral adiposity index (VAI) is a convenient index linked to a series of metabolic abnormalities and a variety of diseases, including cerebrovascular diseases, researchers conducted this cross‐sectional study to investigate the connection between VAI and cervical arterial atherosclerosis. They used the multistage stratified random cluster sampling approach to acquire a representative sample of residents aged ≥ 40 in the general population of northeast China. All candidates completed a detailed questionnaire and provided blood samples. In total, 3,688 people aged ≥ 40 years who had cervical arterial ultrasound were eventually included, 3.2% of whom had increased intima‐media thickness, 48.6% had a carotid plaque, and 4.0% had cervical artery stenosis (CAS). Overall, the authors concluded that VAI was related to carotid plaque and CAS in the general population that is older than 40 years.
