Visceral adipose accumulation increased the risk of hyperuricemia among middle-aged and elderly adults: A population-based study

Journal of Translational Medicine Oct 16, 2019

Huang X, Jiang X, Wang L, et al. - Via a cross-sectional study that included 1,284 individuals aged ≥ 40 years old enrolled from communities in Zhonglou District, Changzhou, researchers examined the independent contribution of visceral adipose measured by visceral adiposity index and lipid accumulation product and liver fat evaluated by fatty liver index to the risk of hyperuricemia (a result of impaired uric acid metabolism, has risen as a critical public health issue due to its significant influence on a wide range of clinical morbidity status). The predominance of hyperuricemia was 15.9% which steadily rose across tertiles of adiposity-based indices. Compared with BMI, waist circumference and neck circumference, the visceral adipose-based measurements (visceral adiposity index, fatty liver index, lipid accumulation product) had better potential to segregate hyperuricemia and the highest power was exhibited by visceral adiposity index. With a 1-unit increase of visceral adiposity index, fatty liver index, and lipid accumulation product, multivariate logistic regression discovered 1.49-fold, 2.21-fold, and 2.12-fold heightened risk of hyperuricemia, respectively. No important correlations of BMI, waist circumference and neck circumference with hyperuricemia were seen. Thus, among middle-aged and old Chinese adults, irrespective of BMI, waist circumference and neck circumference, visceral adipose accumulation raised the risk of hyperuricemia.
