Viruses causing lower respiratory symptoms in young children: Findings from the ORChID birth cohort

Sarna M, et al. - Researchers sought to describe disease-pathogen associations of respiratory viruses. They also intended to quantify virus-specific attributable risk of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in healthy children during the first 2 years of life. They found that in young children managed within the community, respiratory syncytial virus and human metapneumovirus were strongly associated with ARIs and lower respiratory symptoms. This implied that successful development of vaccines against these two viruses should afford substantial health benefits.
