Viral reservoir in early-treated HIV-infected children and markers for sustained viral suppression

Clinical Infectious Diseases Feb 25, 2021

Ajibola G, Garcia-Broncano P, Maswabi K, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the impact of very early infant treatment on HIV reservoir, and markers for treatment success. In the Early Infant Treatment Study (EIT), 40 children living with HIV started on antiretroviral treatment (ART) at < 7 days of age were enrolled; 23 children who had initiated treatment between 30-365 days served as controls. The first 27 EIT children tested after at least 84 weeks had significantly lower median quantitative cell-associated DNA compared with 10 controls, which linked with pre-ART DNA. Overall findings suggest that initiating ART at < 1 week was linked with lower viral reservoir. They indicated negative serostatus and qualitative DNA as valuable markers for sustained viral suppression from 24-84 weeks.
