Viral and bacterial upper respiratory tract infection in hospital health care workers over time and association with symptoms
BMC Infectious Diseases Aug 26, 2017
MacIntyre CR, et al. – Authors performed this work to investigate the presence and significance of bacteria and viruses in the upper respiratory tract of healthcare workers (HCWs), and association with respiratory symptoms. The upper respiratory tract of hospital HCWs was observed to harbor high load of bacteria and viruses, which could reflect greater exposure to respiratory infections in the hospital. Although respiratory infections were mostly symptomatic, the association between bacterial colonization and symptomatic illness was not clear. In the healthcare setting, HCWs seemed to acquire and transmit infection to patients and other HCWs around them. They recommend larger studies to explore ongoing occupational risk of respiratory infection in hospitals HCWs.
