Violence-related disparities experienced by black youth and young adults: Opportunities for prevention

American Journal of Preventive Medicine Aug 29, 2018

Sheats K, et al. - In the present study, researchers intended to describe violence-related disparities experienced by young blacks in the U.S. Compared with whites, black adolescents and young adults were at higher risk for the most physically harmful forms of violence. The findings from the present study suggested that disproportionate exposure to violence for blacks might contribute to disparities in physical injury and long-term mental and physical health. They discovered that that understanding the violence experiences of this age group and the social contexts surrounding these experiences can help improve health for blacks in the U.S. To reduce health disparities experienced by black communities, identifying and reducing disparities in violence was essential.
