Video vs direct and augmented direct laryngoscopy in pediatric tracheal intubations
Academic Emergency Medicine Nov 17, 2019
Kaji AH, Shover C, Lee J, et al. - Researchers performed a comparison of first-attempt intubation success between video laryngoscopy (VL) and all direct laryngoscopy (DL), including “augmented DL” for pediatric intubations. Using the National Emergency Airway Registry database, they identified 625 analyzable pediatric encounters. Of these, 294 (47.0%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 25.1% to 69.0%) were DL and 332 (53.1%, 95% CI = 31.0% to 74.9%) were VL. In this pediatric population, VL was associated with higher first-pass success when compared with DL. This was observed even in the subgroup of patients < 2 years, as well as when DL was augmented. Adverse effects between DL and VL did not differ.
