Vestibular schwannoma tumor size is associated with acute vestibular symptoms after gamma knife therapy
Otology & Neurotology Aug 22, 2019
Lee DY, Lerner DK, Naples JG, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective chart review to assess how tumor characteristics of pretreatment vestibular schwannoma (VS) are correlated with vestibular symptoms following surgery with gamma knife (GK). Study participants included patients undergoing GK treatment for VS at the institution from 2005 to 2018. All patients received between 12 and 13 Gy radiation doses. For patients with acute vestibular symptoms, pretreatment tumors were significantly smaller. Within 6 months after treatment, patients with tumors below 1.6 cm were more probable to receive referrals for vestibular rehabilitation. Higher rates of post-GK vestibular symptoms were significantly linked to smaller vestibular schwannomas. The tumor size of pretreatment can be used to advise patients on the probability of post-GK vestibular symptoms and vestibular rehabilitation.
