Vertebrobasilar artery calcification: Prevalence and risk factors in the general population
Atherosclerosis May 09, 2019
van der Toorn JE, et al. - Among 2,483 participants (mean age: 69.2 years, 52% female) from the Rotterdam Study, researchers determined if prevalence, intervessel associations, and risk factors of vertebrobasilar artery calcification (VBAC) could be used as markers of vertebrobasilar arteriosclerosis. The participants underwent non-enhanced computed tomography for VBAC quantification. Findings revealed the occurrence of VBAC in over 20% of elderly community dwelling patients. In addition, weak to moderate correlations were observed between VBAC and coronary artery calcification, aortic arch calcification, extracranial- and intracranial carotid artery calcification. Both sexes demonstrated an association of hypertension, diabetes, and current smoking with the presence of VBAC. A link between obesity and VBAC was evident in men.
