Ventral striatal dopaminergic defect is associated with hallucinations in Parkinson's disease
European Journal of Neurology Aug 25, 2017
Jaakkola E, et al. – The physicians examined the dopaminergic mechanisms of visual hallucinations (VHs) and specifically whether the degree of striatal dopamine transporter (DAT) function or extrastriatal serotonin transporter (SERT) function could predict the appearance of VHs in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). They concluded that low striatal DAT function could predispose PD patients to VHs, and the regional distribution of the findings proposed a particular role of the ventral striatum. This was in line with non–PD research that had implicated ventral striatal dysfunction in psychosis.
