Venous thromboembolism-related readmission in emergency general surgery patients: A role for prophylaxis upon discharge?
Journal of the American College of Surgeons Mar 30, 2018
DeWane MP, et al. - Researchers searched for risk factors associated with venous thromboembolism (VTE) formation after discharge for emergency general surgery (EGS) operations by analyzing the American College of Surgeons NSQIP database. They observed that after discharge, over 30% of VTEs in the EGS population occur. Readmission is required for a vast majority of these. Prophylactic anticoagulation at discharge may benefit select high-risk EGS subgroups. Predictive factors for post-discharge VTE included prolonged length of stay, presence of metastatic cancer, urinary tract infection and postoperative sepsis.
