Venous thromboembolism in children with sickle cell disease: A retrospective cohort study

The Journal of Pediatrics Apr 03, 2018

Woods GM, et al. - The cumulative incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) who were followed at a single institution was determined to illustrate the risk factors associated with VTE development in patients with SCD, aged 0-21 years, followed at the Nationwide Children's Hospital over a 6-year period. The cumulative incidence of VTE in children with SCD was 2.9%. The hemoglobin SS genotype, CVC presence, central nervous system vasculopathy, chronic transfusion therapy, and older age served as risk factors for VTE. Approximately 3% of children with SCD presented with a history of VTE. Therefore, CVC was shown to be an independent predictor of VTE in the study cohort.
