Vegetable dietary pattern may protect mild and persistent allergic rhinitis phenotype depending on genetic risk in schoolchildren
Pediatric Allergy and Immunology Jun 16, 2020
Oh HY, Lee SY, Jung S, et al. - Researchers determined the link between dietary patterns and allergic rhinitis (AR) in schoolchildren as well as the impact of diet on AR based on a genetic risk score (GRS). From the Panel Study on Korean Children, they recruited 435 7‐year‐old schoolchildren. Dietary parameters included dietary patterns (vegetable, sugar, and meat) and dietary inflammatory index. Using questionnaires regarding treatment in the past 12 months and the ARIA guideline, they defined AR and its severity, respectively. Experts computed a GRS using 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms for allergic diseases. Based on the findings, a lower risk of mild and persistent AR might be observed in relation to a vegetable dietary pattern characterized by high consumption of anti‐inflammatory nutrients and higher vitamin D level in blood. A genetic factor was shown to modify this beneficial impact.
