Rabin JS, et al. - Using newly available positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, researchers examined whether a well-validated measurement of systemic vascular risk and β-amyloid (Aβ) burden is interactive with regional tau burden. Baseline vascular risk was quantified with the office-based Framingham Heart Study cardiovascular disease risk algorithm (FHS-CVD) for 152 clinically normal older adults. A significant interaction was noted between FHS-CVD and Aβ burden on subsequently measured inferior temporal cortex (ITC) tau, whereby combined higher FHS-CVD and elevated Aβ burden was linked to increased tau. When coupled with high Aβ burden, the elevated vascular risk might influence tau burden. A potential link between vascular risk and tau pathology in preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) was suggested in this analysis.
