Vascular bowel and mesenteric injury in blunt abdominal trauma: A single center experience
Clinical Radiology Oct 21, 2020
Tilden W, et al. - Researchers sought to establish common patterns of injury in vascular bowel and mesenteric injury (VBMI). In addition, they investigated the factors that may correlate to delayed treatment. Computed tomography images of 41 patients with blunt VBMI were reviewed for the specific location of injury and additional features such as seatbelt bruising and lumbar hernias. Further, they reviewed surgical reports to record any pertinent surgical findings at laparotomy. Per findings, risk of VBMI was increased for restrained car occupants involved in road traffic collisions with particular susceptibility of the ileocaecal mesentery. These findings may aid the reporting radiologist and trauma surgeon in determining the patients that may need careful monitoring for the development of delayed bowel ischemia.
