Lee T, et al. - Researchers, using an observational study design, compared clinical outcomes in elderly patients who initiated hemodialysis with a central venous catheter and subsequently had an arteriovenous fistula or graft placed. They found that those who underwent subsequent arteriovenous fistula placement within 6 months vs those receiving an arteriovenous graft, had fewer hospitalizations due to infections and a lower likelihood of death despite extended central venous catheter dependence.
