Varicella infections in patients with end stage renal disease: A systematic review
BMC Nephrology Jul 27, 2018
Ong CY, et al. - Researchers used PubMed, Embase and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) databases to assess the influence of varicella infection among adult patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) and make a recommendation for vaccination. A total of 29 articles were selected, including mainly case reports. The included studies were focused on the prevalence of seronegativity, impact (morbidity, length of stay, and mortality) of varicella among patients with ESRD, seroconversion rates and safety of varicella vaccination. Findings revealed the association of varicella with significant morbidity and mortality rates in adult patients with ESRD. They recommended varicella vaccination be considered for the vulnerable, seronegative patients.
