Variations in testosterone pathway genes and susceptibility to testicular cancer in Norwegian men
International Journal of Andrology Nov 01, 2019
Kristiansen W, et al. - Given testicular cancer (TC) risk may be assumingly influenced by imbalance between the oestrogen and androgen levels in utero, and therefore, there may be a possible contribution of variation in genes implicated in the action of sex hormones to the variability of an individual’s susceptibility to TC, researchers determined polymorphisms in the luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR), 5α-reductase II and androgen receptor genes as well as their likely connection with TC in this case-control study involving 651 TC cases and 313 controls in a Norwegian population. On comparing genotypes between all TC cases and controls, they found a statistical significant variation in patients being heterozygous for the LHR Asn312Ser polymorphism. The histological subtypes seminoma and non-seminoma demonstrated no statistically significant difference. Overall, a possible link between genetic variation in the LHR gene and the risk of developing TC was indicated.
