Variations in postoperative opioid prescribing by day of week and duration of hospital stay
Surgery Jul 21, 2020
Lazar DJ, Zaveri S, Khetan P, et al. - Researchers here examined if postoperative opioid prescribing patterns are affected by day of the week or the postoperative day at the time of discharge. From January 2014 through April 2019, they identified data of 13,545 ambulatory operations and 10,838 inpatient cases who underwent commonly performed procedures at their institution. Analysis revealed prescription of more opioids on discharges later in the week and after prolonged hospital stays perhaps to avoid patients running out of medication. Providers may unintentionally allow these non-clinical factors to affect prescription of postoperative opioid. Findings emphasize raising awareness concerning these inadvertent biases to reduce excess prescribing of potentially addicting opioids after an operation.
