Annals of Internal Medicine Oct 08, 2019
Luo J, et al. – Via performing a cross-sectional study of drug pricing data from GoodRx, an online tool for comparing drug prices representing over 60,000 US pharmacies (fall 2015), researchers described cash price differences by retail pharmacy type for 10 generic- and 6 brand-name drugs throughout the United States and scaled by ZIP code. Across 16,325 ZIP codes, 68,353 unique pharmacy stores added cash prices. In comparison with large chains, for generic drugs, independent pharmacies and small chains had the greatest cash prices, with big-box pharmacies reporting the lowest. Moreover, across all types of evaluated retail pharmacies, relative variations in cash prices for brand-name drugs were moderate.
