Variation in postcolonoscopy colorectal cancer across colonoscopy providers in English National Health Service: Population based cohort study
BMJ Nov 21, 2019
Burr NE, Derbyshire E, Taylor J, et al. - In this population-based cohort study of individuals who underwent a colonoscopy and afterward diagnosed as having colorectal cancer up to three years following their investigation (PCCRC-3yr), experts quantified postcolonoscopy colorectal cancer (PCCRC) rates in England via using recent World Endoscopy Organisation guidelines, contrasted incidence among colonoscopy providers, and investigated correlated factors that could profit from quality improvement initiatives. It was observed that across the National Health Service (NHS) colonoscopy providers in England, wide disparity subsists in PCCRC-3yr rates. In colonoscopies carried out under the NHS bowel cancer screening programme, the lowest incidence was observed. Moreover, by allowing earlier diagnosis, eliminating premalignant polyps, and hence enhancing outcomes, quality improvement, initiatives are required to discuss this disparity in rates and prevent colorectal cancer.
