Variation in nonmelanoma skin cancer incidence by treatment modality among patients receiving multiple kidney transplants
JAMA May 13, 2019
Sexton DJ, et al. - Using Irish national registry data, researchers ascertained if the incidence of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is reduced during periods of graft loss and a return to dialysis in patients who receive multiple kidney transplants. Findings revealed that there was a residual higher risk in recipients of multiple kidney transplants, even as the incidence of NMSC fell during periods defined by transplant failure. The overall stagnant incidence of invasive cancer stresses the necessity for continued cancer monitoring during graft failure, although ascertainment bias may have contributed to observed trends. These outcomes can help doctors to advise transplant recipients on the risks of skin cancer, since the lower risk seen with graft failure is still considerably higher vs the general population.
